The National Security Education Program (NSEP) is a key initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) of the U.S. Department of War (DoW). DLNSEO has program management oversight of many high value training and education programs. NSEP’s primary mission is to develop a pipeline of foreign language and culture expertise for the U.S. Federal government workforce. NSEP was established by the David L. Boren National Security Education Act of 1991. NSEP represents an investment in vital expertise in languages and cultures critical to U.S. national security. NSEP award recipients agree to work in qualifying national security positions for a minimum of one year. This unique service requirement generates a pool of U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with competencies in critical languages and area studies who are highly committed to serving at the federal level in the national security community.

The Institute for International Education (IIE) oversees The Language Flagship and administers Boren Scholarships and Fellowships on behalf of the National Security Education Program. IIE implements many of the world’s most prestigious and innovative scholarship and training programs, including supporting the Flagship educational and cultural exchange programs of the U.S. Departments of State and War. IIE is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building international goodwill through educational and cultural exchange among nations. By enabling more than 18,000 outstanding scholars each year to study, conduct research, receive practical training, or provide technical assistance outside their own countries, IIE fosters mutual understanding, builds global problem-solving capabilities, and strengthens the international competence of U.S. citizens.
